Wheel Hubs
Proper maintenance of hubs is a key aspect of Spec Racer Ford race
preparation. The hub / bearing combination were designed for street
cars, and generally expected to last the life of the car. But in racing
situations, the bearings have to be replaced on a regular basis.
Bearings are pressed on and off the hubs, resulting in wear of the
hub - bearing surface. Many times bearing failure also causes the hub to
be damaged.
Types of Hub
There are three generations of SRF hubs.
- "Original" - Renault original equipment (middle in picture with
wheel bearing race)
- "PBS" - Produced for a short period after new orginal hubs
weren't available. (on the left)
- "Fast Forward" - racing hubs currently being manufactured.

"Original" Hubs
|
These were original equipment on the Renault Alliance. They have been
out of new production for many years, but used from salvage cars have
been available until recently.
These hubs performed quite well and used ones were very reliable and
a good value.

"PBS" Hubs
|
PBS started making hubs when new Renault hubs were in short supply.
They were welcomed at first, but did not hold up for repeated bearing
replacement and fell out of favor.
For a while people went back to using used "original" hubs.
We use uprights that have these hubs as spares. they are o.k. until
they get of of taper tolerance, they they are terrible.

"Fast Forward" Hubs
|
The current state-of-the-art hub was enginneered for SCCA Enterprises
by Fast Forward, and race shop in California. These are really nice
units and perform really well.
They come fitted with long wheel studs and the studs don't have to be
cut-down to keep from rubbing on the upright.
