What are you using?
Where are you getting them?
How much were they? The last few I bought were 60ish I think and i see 130 on the CSR websites. Hell no do I want to spend 130 bucks for bearings that last that short.
The ones I ran in the past that Jay Motorsports got for me aren't available right now.

Strange, no ball bearings listed on Midwest Spec Racer, just the $130 roller bearings. I had roller bearings on both sides of the rear axle. After over two seasons, I couldn't face not replacing them. When I took them apart, I couldn't see any signs of wear. So, while you'll spend $130/bearing, they may last a long time. If mine had no problem making it through 2+ seasons (10 to 12 race / DE weekends per season) on the rear axle, they may last indefinitely on the front. That said, the common wisdom is that the ball bearings are faster.

Working to get some of the bearings that Jay and others had in the past. The company does not make it easy. Also have another source I am checking into for the ball bearings. Will post here if anything works out.

Ed, thanks for the info on the roller bearings. I hadn't heard they were going that long.

For roller bearings search for SKF B31, they can usually be had for 30-50 each. I think the BECK/ARNLEY Part # 0513938 might be ball, but I'm not sure. The SNR - GB 12438 S01 is a ball bearing, but I have no idea where you would get it. I'll sell you one for 129 though:)
Using a bearing friction calculator, the tapered roller bearing in a maxed out SRF scenario 120mph 1.3g turn uses around 0.2 horsepower more than angular contact ball between all 4 bearings. In straight line running and at lower speeds the difference goes down. |
Adam, great stuff there! Thanks.

If you look on E-Bay under "Renault Alliance Wheel Bearing" you may find your answer-----they show the 051398 and several other options----seem reasonably priced if they are what you need--------Larry
I would guess you need front for rear and vice-versa as the renault alliance was front wheel drive |

Mike Wold-Steele used to sell ball bearings. I don't know if he'll respond, but it might be worth a try.
When installing them, does anyone re-face the mating edges? I had to do that to get the slop out of the wheel, and it's easier to do before you start (gotta put a micrometer on the next set I replace). |
