The Devil in the Dark 2018 ... is on!

The South Jersey Region and New Jersey Motorsports Park announce the ninth running of The Devil in the Dark 12 Hour endurance race on Thunderbolt Circuit at NJMP. The 2018 edition will be held on Saturday, 27 October 2018 and will again race around the clock into the night.

A draft version the event supps for The Devil has been posted on the Region website. This version is substantially complete but will not be official until approved by SCCA. This is an advance version for teams planning to enter the event. Registration for this year's event will open on 1 February.

There are very few changes in the 12 Hour regulations for 2018. A small number of items highlighted in the recent endurance survey have been incorporated this year in an effort to broaden the competitor base.

A major change for this year's race is the event date moving from its traditional April slot to the end of October. It was the time of year most preferred in the survey and the one which creates the fewest conflicts with other events.

The only significant update to the car preparation rules this year is a pair of measures intended to encourage the use of street tires (TW 180+). Competitors who use street tires in this year's race will have the option to ( a) run in the next lower Endurance Class or ( b ) run in the same Endurance Class with no wheel / tire size restrictions. Parity between street tires and DOT RComps was the single most requested change to the race format since it provides the opportunity for a substantial reduction in a team's race budget.

The only change in car classifications is Spec Racers have been moved to their own class to eliminate an existing class inequity. In conjunction with the separate classing, a new 6 Hour Spec Racer Endurance Challenge will be a major feature of The Devil during the Day 6 Hour race.

There are no changes to the event operations - driver eligibility, pit stops, fueling, etc.

There will be an SCCA Test Day on Friday, 26 October for 12 Hour competitors and other closed wheel cars including Spec Racers.

Racing around the clock again in 2018!

In the above release, the South Jersey Region is reaching out to Spec Racer drivers for this year's The Devil in the Dark 12 Hour endurance race and its companion The Devil during the Day 6 Hour endurance race. Spec Racers have always expressed interested in long distance races but few have entered previous editions of the 12 Hour. The feedback the Region has received is ( a) there has been a feeling Spec Racers have been inequitably classed and ( b ) many racers are not interested in adding lights to their cars for a single race.

The Region is responding to this feedback with a couple of changes which it hopes will be attractive to the Spec Racer community. The first step is to give Spec Racers their own class rather than lumping them with the disparate cars in the existing five Endurance Classes. The second step is creating a new 6 Hour Spec Racer Endurance Challenge as part of their recent The Devil during the Day 6 Hour. A major emphasis and recognition will be given to the new Spec Racer enduro. Detail plans are still be developed and will be released in the next 30 days.

If you have any suggestions or questions, please feel free to contact me.

Hope to see ya at The Devil

Millville NJ, May 2018. Registration for The Devil in the Dark 2018 12 Hour Endurance Race is now open on MotorsportReg (direct registration link). This year's event will be run on 27 October and is the only long distance SCCA endurance race in 2018.

Again this year, there will be a companion race concurrent with the 12 Hour - The Devil during the Day 6 Hour race. There will be separate results and trophies for the 6 Hour which will feature the Spec Racer Endurance Challenge.

There are two very important dates approaching for this year's event. The first is the end of the 'Earlybird' entry fees at noon on 1 June; entries received prior to this date will receive a $200 (12 Hour) or $100 (6 Hour) discount from the regular entry fee. The second date is 6 June when the Region BoD meets to consider its go-no go decision. After last year's substantial financial loss, the Region established a date to determine whether it has sufficient commitment for a successful event or whether it should repurpose the weekend for an alternate event. Teams considering this year's event are urged to commit by the end of May.

The only change in car classifications is Spec Racers have been moved to their own class to eliminate an existing class inequity. In conjunction with the separate classing, the new Spec Racer Endurance Challenge will be a major feature of the 6 Hour race.

There are no changes to the event operations - driver eligibility, pit stops, fueling, etc. - from prior years.

The supps for the event are on the Region website. Contact Chief Steward Terry Hanushek for any questions or clarifications.

Reminders

There will be an SCCA Test Day on Friday, 26 October for 12 / 6 Hour competitors and other closed wheel cars.

Early commitments are necessary to keep this event alive.

'Earlybird' expires in one week

Millville NJ, May 2018. Earlybird Registration for The Devil in the Dark 2018 12 Hour Endurance Race will be available for one more week. Entries received by noon on 1 June will receive a $200 (12 Hour) or $100 (6 Hour) discount from the regular entry fee. The event registration is available on MotorsportReg (direct registration link).

The beginning of June has extra importance for this year's event. On 6 June, the Region BoD meets to consider its go-no go decision. After last year's substantial financial loss, the Region established a date to determine whether it has sufficient commitment for a successful event or whether it should repurpose the weekend for an alternate event. IMPORTANT: Teams considering this year's event are urged to register by the end of May to make their commitment. Without sufficient commitments, the Region BoD may cancel our traditional endurance race ... and once it's gone, IT'S GONE.

Again this year, there will be a companion race concurrent with the 12 Hour - The Devil during the Day 6 Hour race. There will be separate results and trophies for the 6 Hour which will feature the Spec Racer Endurance Challenge.

The 12 Hour / 6 Hour endurance races are open to production based cars running on DOT approved tires. All recognized road racing licenses are accepted. The supplemental regulations for the 2018 event are on the Region website. Contact Chief Steward Terry Hanushek for any questions or clarifications.

Millville NJ, June 2018. Good news for endurance racing! The South Jersey Region BoD has reviewed the status of The Devil in the Dark 2018 and is confident of its success. As a result, there will be no disruption in the schedule and the race will be held in October as planned. The Region wishes to thank all of our entrants who have committed to this year's race and encourage teams who have been in "wait and see" mode to start planning for this year's 'around the clock' endurance race.

The event registration is available on MotorsportReg (direct registration link).

The 12 Hour / 6 Hour endurance races are open to production based cars running on DOT approved or TW180+ tires. "If it is safe, it can race". All recognized road racing licenses are accepted. It's a Jersey Affair

Millville NJ, July 2018. This month, the Northern New Jersey and South Jersey Regions announced they will jointly present The Devil in the Dark 2018 12 Hour endurance race. This event sharing arrangement harkens back to the 2010-2014 races when the two regions developed this premiere endurance race. It brings together both Garden State regions to enhance the quality of this year's 12 Hour.

To recap last month's good news - the boards of both regions have greenlighted this year's 12 Hour. As a result, there will be no disruption in the schedule and the race will be held in October as planned. The regions wish to thank all of the entrants who have committed to this year's race and encourage teams who have been in "wait and see" mode to start planning for this year's 'around the clock' endurance race.

The event registration is available on MotorsportReg (direct registration link).

Reminder

There will be an SCCA Test Day on Friday, 26 October for 12 / 6 Hour competitors and other closed wheel cars - you do not need to be a 12 Hour entrant to test.

Two Months to the Green

Millville NJ, August 2018. After talking about The Devil in the Dark 2018 12 Hour endurance race since the beginning of the year, we are just two months before this year's event. The summer race season is winding down and it is time to firm up plans for this year's 12 Hour. Are you ready to take the challenge?

The Devil 12 Hour is the only current SCCA long distance endurance race. Its traditional day into night format continues to be a popular attraction for endurance teams. This year its date has been moved to the end of October to avoid the early-mid season schedule conflicts.

To recap last month's news, the Northern New Jersey and South Regions have reached an agreement for the two regions to jointly operate this year's race. Volunteers from the two regions will work together to further strengthen the organization of the annual 12 Hour endurance event. Drivers from NNJR and SJR are encouraged to support our 'home state' endurance race.

The event registration is available on MotorsportReg (direct registration link).

Again this year there will be a companion race concurrent with the 12 Hour - The Devil during the Day 6 Hour race. There will be separate results and trophies for the 6 Hour which will feature the Spec Racer Endurance Challenge.

Reminder

There will be an SCCA Test Day on Friday, 26 October for 12 / 6 Hour competitors and other closed wheel cars - you do not need to be a 12 Hour entrant to test.

Millville NJ, September 2018. The countdown clock is ticking - 30 days .... 29 days .... until The Devil in the Dark 2018 12 Hour endurance race.
