Quick question: So far I have only seen in person open (arched) rear wheel body. But I notice that there are covered rear wheel panel... Is there a reason for this (aerodynamics) and would or does it make a difference? I searched the Forum but could not find any answers on the subject.

I could be wrong but I believe it is required by the regulations to have the wheel opening cutout. It was mostly an aesthetic thing, as well as access to the rear wheel.

Yes, the wheel cutout is required. Aesthetics, as Bill states, plus I believe the Goodyears run a touch wider at the sidewall and had more issues rubbing than the old Yoks (even though they are both 205's). Can't say that's for certain though... just rings a bell that that was the case.

Denny is correct on the Goodyear rubbing. Unless you gave the rear far less camber than required it would rub all of the yellow paint off the sidwall.

From the June GCR: http://scca.cdn.racersites.com/prod/ass ... 0-June.pdf
k. Required Bodywork Modification: A 22.5” diameter wheel arch shall be cut in each side of the tail section. Viewing the tail section from the side, draw a vertical line at the drive axle centerline. Locate the top of the wheel arch at a point measured from the bottom edge of the tail section 9.25” vertically along the centerline. The 22.5” diameter circle inter- sects the bottom edge of the tail section 11.1” either side of the centerline. The tail section may be reinforced in the forward and aft portions of the wheel arch. Dimension tolerance is +/- 0.75”. Bob Breton - SRF 51 - San Francisco Region

This is so you ensure that it cracks in the top/middle of the wheel arch. |
