Do these things work better than the 1" ball valves?
It looks like they might
1 1/2" door type
Then there is this indy style (1 3/4" round)
And the one we use. (1" ball valve)
Surge Tank Valve (legal or not)

I don't believe changing these parts is legal... Steve Fenske or Mikey D?

I think he is suggesting they be made legal? I've never had a problem with the ball valves in a properly installed tank. I think somewhere they suggest using safety wire to keep them from getting stuck. Dave Harriman

Back in the olden days, when the Fords were new, we had a real issue with the surge box balls sticking in the clips. They never admitted it, but it appeared that either the balls were undersized or the clips were oversized, so they would stick in the open position, emptying the box, and the engine would die momentarily. We chased that for a long time, and finally Brian, who crewed for me, pulled out the cell at Sebring and figured it out. He used "X"ed safety wire to retain the balls and everything worked perfectly. Never had a problem with the surge box from then on. Not sure if that would fix any issue you have with the set up.

The new ball valves have a roll pin that you can see on the right of the bottom pic.
I think it does the same trick as the safety wire. So far as the trap door valves go, I was just wondering about legality. My cell is a 1996 and is not leaking but, I'm replacing it anyway along with the new HV pump & foam. I'm trying to do all updates associated with the cell at once rather than installing new (better?) valves sometime in the future. Dave Gills

I'm not sure I've ever seen anything in the GCR about specific types of surge boxes. Am I missing it?

If it's not spelled out as "legal" assume by default that it's not (that the #1 "spec" rule!)

So where is it spelled out that only a 1" ball valve is legal? Think for yourself...The "flapper" is new technology. Who would have known that some future technology (flapper) might be better and write a rule against it. Last edited by WhatsThatNoise on Fri Feb 08, 2013 11:15 am, edited 1 time in total.

I certainly understand the "if it doesn't say it, assume it's spec" aspect, that's part of what I like about the class. However, I don't see anywhere in the GCR where any surge box style or part number is listed anywhere. In fact, I don't see anywhere where a surge box is or isn't required. There are a variety of surge boxes available, and I think Dave raises an interesting point. Just curious if anyone knows more (definitively) than what I've found by searching.
