Has anyone else had issues with this. Fresh paint job and the paint on the rear section is coming off in small pieces, with lots of cracking. Never had that problem as a gen2. Dealing with it for a second time now. Thinking of doing some reinforcement under that area, with another layer of Matt and resin, and or a thin layer of foam and resin like they do in the marine industry. Also looked at thin rubber adhesive backed pieces to apply, but worry about them coming off in the heat.

It's hard to say what caused it, without knowing what preparations you took before painting. It sounds like the paint either didn't adhere to the primer or the primer didn't adhere to the fiberglass. Do the paint chips have primer showing on the back, or is fiberglass adhered to the paint chips?

Hi Kurt,
The paint isn't adhering to the primer. Interestingly, as a Gen2 I never had this problem, but that may not be relevant, as the tail was repainted of course with the Gen3 conversion. Didn't happen at Daytona, but noticed it at Road America last August, which has some pretty serious curbing, which you use in places, so I felt it was a vibration issue. Had it repainted over winter and first time out at Summit Point, it started happening again. Looking at some other SRF's in the paddock, I could see where it looked like there were signs of similar cracking.

This is a common problem with all fiberglass and carbon bodies. Some of the rear sections have a thin fiberglass just above the tires. The sticky tires hold onto rocks and then when they come off they impact the fiberglass and cause it to deform and then the paint cracks. The best way to eliminate the problem is to put an extra layer of fiberglass on the inside of the wheel wells where the rocks hit and where the cracks are. Make sure you rough sand the old fiberglass before applying the new layer and it is a good idea to use cloth and not mat.
If you want to do even a better job buy some structural core material for composite laminates either foam or honeycomb. This will make the wheel wells really strong and will not crack.

You could try to add a vinyl wrap over the paint. Maybe the wrap color does not match 100% your paint but race cars are not beauty queens. lol.
I started using some 3M wrap Partial in the front and it is super easy to apply and so far more durable than paint.
