I like the fiberglass seat, but mine looks really cruddy -- like Subway-seat cruddy. I plan to install a two-part foam seat insert. That will cover some of it, but not all. Do the rules allow one to paint the fiberglass seat? Any reason not to paint it? Any suggestions for a paint type? I was thinking maybe some roll-on bedliner?

Advice from the fiberglass king here
any good paint will work but i would get an enamel or epoxy paint that is two part; i.e., has a catalyst. also rough up any of the gel coat surface very well with sandpaper, wet sanding is best, start with 180 grit and work your way to 400. the paint wont adhere to the gel coat unless it has something to stick to and a sanded surface will help greatly at adhering. You can paint it. Yes sand it and spray it. Not bed liner it is to rough. If you do not paint or just want to check before you do. Take it by a paint shop and ask if they could spray it for you. It could be just as cheap then buying the stuff if you don't have it and want something better then a rattle can job.

I painted my white seat black with good quality primer and paint. Now, every time the seat belt is dropped onto the seat, it chips the paint. I have to sand it down every year, and repaint it. I would think twice about painting it.

I used Hot Rod Black, a flat paint from Summit SMM-HR010. I sanded the gel coat and then painted it with the SEM epoxy paint and it looks great. It was a black gel coat but I haven't seen any chipping so far. I then made up a foam bead insert. The kit to make the foam seat is available from Pegasus.

I may have missed something... what was the first coat, the SEM epoxy and then covered with the Hot Rod Black?
