Very cool story. BTW, I own the Sports Renault that he ran in Cal Club (#595). Still have one of his 1992 win stickers inside the car! His family called me not long after his accident to see if I'd be willing to sell them the car (it was converted to a Ford by the time I bought it), as they were reaching out to find cars he had raced through the years. Said I was willing, but never heard back from them.

In my early days of racing, I was at Portland for the first time. Sam was racing a Sport Renault. We did a track ride in our rental car and I watched as he absorbed the turns and overall track layout. He had never raced at Portland. He won both races by a large margin. I knew he had great driving skills and was also a regular guy. Pleasant, sharing and approachable. He went on to a great racing career and I was so sad when I heard about his accident.

He has overcome his injuries and been a great success and inspiration!

I knew him back when he drove a Sports Renault in the early 90s.
