Im 6'2" 220, got a 20 deg. large Hans useing it with fiber glass seat . The Hans pushes my head forward 3" from the head pad, I can't see how any of them could work for me. Have any suggestions

A simpson Hybrid Pro Rage doesn't have that issue. http://simpsonraceproducts.com/head-nec ... _rage.html Although I bet a HANS 20 isn't the right one for someone your size in a Fiberglass seat. I'd bet good money that the 30 would take care of most if not all of the problem if you want to stick with HANS. Disclaimer: I use and sell the Hybrid Pro but have used HANS and DefNder (now defunct) in the past. Joe Cooley

Did you try a 30?

Most spec racers use a 30 I think - seems to be the right angle for us- and I needed to remove some (ok, all) of the headrest padding so it cleared and did not transfer vibrations into it even though I have a Butler with the small offset shelf built into the seat top to clear the HANS. I also thickened up a layer of the high density foam under the seat padded lining at the seatback top to force a more upright away-from-the-headrest seating position; this also helped alleviate my problem of dozing off during races.

6'1", 220, 20 degree HANS, firberglass seat, and I had the same problem. I use a back pad to push me up out of the seat a little since otherwise my shoulders are too wide and I can't hardly get the car into 4th so that helps a touch. The main thing I did was put a Renault headrest in the car instead of the Ford one (Renault is thinner) and that made a noticeable difference. I could still use another .5" probably since when I get things really snug it's still wedged in there.
I'm open to suggestions that completely solve the problem, but some sort of seat pad moving your body forward in addition to some effort to thin out the current headrest (legally) will help for certain. Deny ____________

A 30 is what you probably need. I have historically been a similar build, and my 30 has worked fine. Now that I've lost some weight, I don't expect it to fit differently, but ya' never can tell...

Dumb question: is the headrest actually required? I vaguely recall just removing mine when I had a fiberglass seat, but I've had the new butler so long I'm not sure anymore.

Glad you asked. I passed tech in 2011 with my headrest out, and I would really prefer to drive without it. Not sure if it's required or if I just got lucky. |

Hi this may answer the question, GCR Pg 661 9.1.9.C.22.:
d. Headrest pad may be reduced in thickness for driver’s comfort to a minimum of one (1) inch. If either the Aluminum Racing Products (ARP) or the Butler P/N 180268 seat is used, to aid with seat positioning, the head rest can be removed completely. It is recommended that the resulting hole in the firewall be covered with suitable aluminum sheet. Double check your GCR also. |
