1 weekend = 6 heat cycles or half the life of the tires @ $800/set = $400/ weekend
Entry fees around here average $300
It costs me $100 in gas to get to the track and back in my truck on average.
The SRF uses 15 gal. of high test = $75
I'd put consumables like oil & brake fluid at $50
I eat nasty track food and sleep in the truck so... < $50
Plus one bottle reasonably good wine at about $20
Grand total = $995/weekend if I don't break anything.
(I'd do test days but, I generally can't get Fridays off)
How much does it cost to race?

Peter J - You forgot to mention how some weekends can cost more for parts, as compared to others! Never mind, if we knew we might never venture out of the garage. See you on the track next summer I hope.

Indeed, repairs to the car and body can be costly.
Fortunately, all is going well. I did a few laps in a spare SRF in late October and Beau Martin has started gathering parts to rebuild the car I crashed at the Sprints. I will be back running the school Regional at Blackhawk in April. |

That's great news Peter! Welcome back! |

My rule of thumb for most any car is a season of racing you need to budget 2X the cost of the car to go race it. I have been in denial over that number for many years, but if you go add up entry fees, travel, repairs, etc, etc, etc, you get there.

So, Charlie, with that in mind, what you want to do is shop for a $500 crapcan. H.(now you tell me!)B. |

If you're on a strict budget, you can always race less often and/or stick closer to home. It helps if you can sleep in your tow vehicle, or better yet, if you live within an hour or two of a racetrack.

Are noses, tails, and radiators considered "consumables"?

Depends on how hungry your car is. (See what I did there? I blamed it all on the car, not the driver.) |

A friend saw my car in the garage and asked why there were five different fasteners holding the nose piece on. I said that it was necessary to ensure maximum splintering and disintegration to ensure sufficient souvenirs for corner workers. |
